A Pinch of Pinterest

One of my more recent obsessions has been a website called Pinterest. It is essentially an online bulletin board on which people can pin images from different websites, repin other people's images, and comment on or like images. The images I find on there compliments and builds my personal fashion sense, gives me new ideas for crafts and home decor, and generally inspires me. I cannot count the number of times that the images have led me to create a new outfit pairing. Also, I have found many recipes on Pinterest that I have subsequently made in my little kitchen, despite the fact that I never really cooked before getting my apartment!

You ought to check out pinterest.com! In order to get an account, you have to get an invite. If you want one, comment on this post with your email and I will send the few I have out!

Spotlight On: Madewell

On of the new up-and-coming stores to the fashion scene is Madewell, but this company has been around for many years! They started out as jean-makers in 1937 and have expanded to include the softest chambray shirts, exquisite leather boots, and lust-worthy dresses. They have excellent sales when you catch them at the right time. Madewell's style is quirky, with a mixture of anthropologie and j.crew. Recently they brought in Alexa Chung as a guest designer, who offers daring designer outfits at reasonable prices. Additionally, they bring it different brands to their website to complete their looks, including Minnetonka Moccasins (one of my favorites!) and Hunter wellies. This shop is definitely one to check out! Unfortunately, the nearest store is in Dallas, but their website offers a clean and easy shopping experience.

Take a look here at madewell.com

Style Icon: Twiggy

Twiggy, also known as Lesley Hornby, is a prominent English model, actress, and singer. She was particularly popular in the swinging '60s where she became famous for her androgynous looks, large eyes, and ultra-skinny figure. By her 16th birthday, she was the world's first international supermodel and named "The Face of 1966" by The Daily Express. Her look was epitomized by long eyelashes, mary jane shoes, and minidresses. She has recently come back into the spotlight with her guest judging on America's Next Top Model.

Some of Twiggy's looks are classic and and can easily be incorporated into your own wardrobe. Try out structured short dresses, striped outfits, black tights, and don't hold back on the mascara! My favorite mascara is Covergirl's LashBlast, which really coats your lashes without clumping or flaking. Also, this fall a heavy faux fur coat will add to this chic '60s vibe!

A Melting Pot of Fabrics

One of the finest characteristics of the United States in my opinion is the fact that our nation is such a melting pot of different religions, ethnicities, cultures, styles, and opinions. Just as it is healthy for a country to have diversity in its people, it is also good for you to have diversity in your wardrobe. My favorite combinations sometimes are the weirdest combinations of fabrics and colors. As the weather cools down I am looking forward to wearing my sequin skirt with a heavier sweater and my leopard print flats. The mixing of different fabrics helps give an outfit a sophisticated and unique look. In the end, it's all about being conscious of your wardrobe and taking time to put together your outfit for the day or night before throwing on those well-worn jeans in your closet. The few key secrets to dressing with style are taking chances with colors, being conscious of figure flattering styles, and infusing your wardrobe with items that reflect your personality.

A few of my favorite combinations for the moment are knit/sequins, silk/wool, and lace/leather as well as seafoam/chartruese, mustard/orchid, and florals/stripes. Do you have any favorite combinations right now?

A Tribute to America, My Homeland

This 10 year anniversary of the 9/11 attacks has brought many things into perspective for me, especially as I watched several of the television programs covering this catastrophic event after spending a few days this summer right next to Ground Zero. I remember when I first heard the news of the attack on the World Trade Center. I was in sixth grade in health class and we received word over the intercom from the school principle that two planes had been flown into the two towers a few minutes earlier. The teacher brought in a TV as we watched the terror unravel before our eyes. I remember being shocked, horrified, and extremely frightened. I had a friend in New England who's father flew planes and I tried not to think that there was a chance he had been on one of those planes.

As I spent time overseas during my time abroad, I became increasingly more thankful for the country that I grew up in. Before I went to England I had a very cynical view of America that was very characteristic and popular for my generation especially during the Bush era. Yet after Obama came into office and the standing of the United States began to improve in the eyes of our international counterparts, my view of the country began to improve. However, as I said, my time overseas really changed my opinion because I realized that the character of our nation and reliance above all on freedom of the individual made us one unique place. My heart swelled with pride as saw the stark differences between the rights of American (especially speech) and the rights of those in England. I yearned by the end of my time there to return back to my homeland and enjoy the culture so unique to the United States.

So in this time of remembrance, I wish to thank the heroes who gave their lives and put their futures on the line for each of us every day. While many of these heroes signed up to fight for us in the armed services or in public service roles, others simply stepped up at times of need to help their fellow man. So many of these individuals go unthanked and now today, I wish to thank them all. Thank you for your compassion, actions, and sacrifice. You inspire the rest of us to be better people to each other, animals, and our planet. I truly hope after this 9/11 anniversary that these heroes, especially those who braved the terrors of the World Trade Center attacks and still survive, will receive the care and help they need.

Tomorrow I will publish my weekly fashion post as today I felt it would be more appropriate to honor the unsung heroes of America.

One Friday Afternoon...

One Friday afternoon I was stuck waiting for my car to get a safety inspection, so I went to Home Depot and walked through the garden area...

The colors of these plants are inspirational!

Then later that evening I went to the new Anthropologie store in Town Center with Erin!

The Treats of Paris

Yesterday was the anniversary of the legendary signing of the Treaty of Paris in 1783. The signatures of representatives from Great Britain, France, Spain, and the United States effectively brought an end to the American Revolutionary War. With this document, Britain was forced to recognize the independence of the 13 colonies and the boundaries of the United States were established. The French were quite instrumental in the war; under Louis XVI, they helped provide guns and ammunition to the American militias against their old enemy, the British. However, the expense of this aid helped push the French economy to the tipping point, causing the bourgeoise and French peasants to begin to revolt against the monarchy. In the end it led to the bloody French Revolution and later Reign of Terror under Robespierre.

Today, France is under an established republic and they are renown worldwide for their trend-setting fashion sense. This fall a few of the key pieces and styles the French are sporting on the street are trench coats, oversized knits, menswear, and ankle booties. While researching this post I ran across photo after photo of girls wearing high-heeled ankle boots with skirts, pants, leggings, and jeans. They have really made this a staple for the fall season! I hope this gives you some inspiration for your style as the temperatures begin plummet!
